Two red river hogs arrived at the zoo des Sables d’Olonne in April 2017.
Belonging to the family of the wild boars, this big mammal is native of rainforests and savannas of Equatorial Africa. Omnivorous, it spends a large part of its time to rummage the ground looking for vegetables, insects and young vertebrates. Thanks to its strong body and its powerful snout, it can move the ground on a big depth to look for roots. Even if this species is not considered as threatened, some populations are affected by hunting and deforestation which destroy massively the biodiversity of these regions.
