In the face of heatwaves, the Zoo des Sables is implementing additional measures to limit the effects of heat on the species that are most sensitive to it, such as red pandas or Amur leopards:
- Installation of sprayers and automatic watering systems to refresh the outdoor enclosures
- Watering the rest rooms and outdoor enclosures
- Increase in the number of food enrichments based on ice cubes
- Enhanced Monitoring
For many other species such as lions, mongooses or meerkats, these climatic conditions are closer to their natural habitat.
Despite the heat, the behaviors therefore remain essentially the same :
- Deployment of wings to protect eggs or young ibis
- Unlimited swimming for bush dogs, lowland tapirs, black footed penguins…
- Naps in the shade for maned wolves, red river hog, primates…
